Monsters in Your Closet

Everyone has those little monsters in the back of their minds, holding them back, those deepest, darkest fears. And all can relate to the feeling of dread when they have to do something they’re afraid of, but those fears can be conquered. Just because something is scary now doesn’t mean it has to dictate what people do.

BHS students have experienced many situations throughout their lifetimes. And high school is all about getting involved, but sometimes fears stop students from taking advantage of the new opportunities at hand.

“I used to be scared of being with upperclassmen and stating my opinion in front of others,” said Alicia Azua (‘18).

Many people share this fear. They don’t want to share their opinions for fear of the labels that it might ensue. No one wants to walk around as “the weirdo”, “the freak”, or an “oddball”. But why should it matter? There’s nothing wrong with being opinionated and speaking freely. Everyone should be proud of their individuality and appreciate the wide variety of ideas that everyone has.

“I used to have a fear of public speaking, but I was kind of forced into doing it. I had no choice but to get over it and in the end, it’s really not the end of the world if you mess up,” said Dakota Renslow (’18).

People shouldn’t let a fear hold them back. Everyone has to experience the world in every way possible. Yeah, maybe it is scary and nerve wrecking to do something new or to try something that’s always been frightening, but don’t let that be a factor on missing out on so many other adventures. That rushing, heavy heart beat, that’s the feeling of life. That’s how people know they’re alive and growing.

“Sometimes a fear of something isn’t as bad as you make it out to be, and you just have to do it and see what happens,” said Marissa Rodriguez (‘18).

So go put yourself out there and experience all that life has to offer. Grab a buddy if you need it, but just go conquer your fear.
