Book Review: Vicious by V. E. Schwab

Story BY: Faith Valdivia, Staff Writer

Vicious by V.E. Schwab is a book about two brilliant, yet arrogant, college students who go through near-death experiences to discover if they could develop extraordinary abilities.

This is the first book I’ve ever given five out of five stars. No book has ever made me feel what this book made me feel. This book made me feel a mix of happiness, excitement, fear, sadness, anger, confusion, and much more. My end goal here is to have you wanting to read this book.

Two boys, Victor Vale and Eliot “Eli” Cardale or, as he goes by, “Eli Ever” are roommates. Both are very intelligent students. But of course, one must always do better than the other. Eli Cardale is going to write about ExtraOrdinaries for his senior thesis.

An ExtraOrdinary, EO for short, is a person who has to go through a near-death experience to gain superpowers. Victor Vale wants to help Eli with his thesis, but he wants to take their research to the next level.

Both main characters try to kill each other. Multiple times. Eli with the power to heal, and Victor with the power to manipulate pain. Victor doesn’t know how to control his ability yet, and ends up killing someone dear to Eli. Eli calls the cops and Victor loathes him for it.

Ten years pass, and Victor is released from prison. He meets a few friends along the way. Mitchell “Mitch” Turner, a person who helped him escape prison, and Sydney Clarke, a thirteen year old girl who he found on the side of the road.

Victor finds out Eli is still alive, and he wants his revenge. This book had me in suspense with every word I read. I related to all of the characters in ways I didn’t even think I would.

I relate to Victor Vale because no matter what he does, there will always be someone better than him. No matter what I do, if I get an A on a test, or get an A in a class, there will always be someone with a higher score than me. With the exception of me getting a perfect 100%, of course.

I related to Eli Ever because he masks his personality more than he should. The only person he can truly read him is Victor, as a quote from the sequel says, “‘Doesn’t know you like I do.” Eli cleaned the blood from his hand. ‘No,’ he said softly. ‘No one ever has.’”

I related to Sydney Clarke because she’s a young girl who just wants to be understood. People treat her as if she’s a child, even if she knows she’s able to handle what comes for her.  And if you relate to any of these characters in the way I did, you should consider reading this wonderful novel.

The author's writing style is beautiful. The author's choice of word was empowering, and did well in showing how all of the characters felt.

This book has a sequel called Vengeful, and is working on a third book called Victorious. The second book was not as great as Vicious, but it was the first book I’ve ever read that’s made me cry.

This book is perfect for people who are looking for an easy read, people who want to read a Fantasy, Mystery, Science Fiction book, or people who just want random book recommendations. People love reading Mystery books in autumn, so this is the perfect book to enjoy the season! If you do choose to read this wonderful book, I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
