Finding Joy

By Faith Garcia: Staff Writer With everything that is going on in the world right now, it can be hard to see the good in everyday life. Despite all of the crazy things that have happened this year and the ongoing loop of negativity, there are still some things that can bring a smile to your face. For example:

  1. Kind words from a stranger - I find it so incredible that a momentary exchange with someone that you have never met before, and will probably never see again, can completely change the course of your day. Some days are so hard, and sometimes all it takes to turn a day around is a small, kind gesture from a stranger.

  2. Looking at nature - It is such a privilege to live in a world as beautiful as this one. Everywhere you look, there is some type of beauty, and there are millions of places that exceed expectations of beauty.

  3. Music - We live in a time where anyone can make music for the rest of the world to enjoy. Despite different tastes, there is always something for everyone, and listening to music that you love can bring so much peace and joy to an individual.

  4. The smell outside after it rains - There is something refreshing about walking outside after a rainstorm and smelling the crisp mix of the wet concrete and cool breeze. It is an instant mood-changer.

  5. Writing - Writing down your thoughts can be so cathartic. Even when you feel like you cannot tell anyone something, writing it down is a helpful way of getting it off your chest. It makes me happier!

  6. Being organized - The feeling you get after you complete a small task is so redeeming. Even after something as small as doing the dishes or making you bed, life almost always feels less daunting.

  7. Practicing gratitude - On any given day, it is important to remember that there is always a reason to be thankful. Reminding yourself of the beautiful things you have in your life instead of thinking about the things you want is essential for a happy life. Look around, it is impossible to not see something you’re appreciative of. Start each day with a grateful heart.

  8. Reading a really good book - I love a book that makes it impossible to put down -- the kind you can finish in one sitting, even if it happens to be after twelve hours. Books can be magic, if you love what you’re reading!

  9. Giving someone a compliment - It feels so good to be kind. The look on someone’s face after you give them a compliment is uplifting beyond measure. Think about how you feel when you receive a compliment; it almost feels better when you cause someone else to feel that way!

  10. Looking at the sky - I find myself looking up more than in front of me. The way the sky swirls at all hours of the day is such a cool reminder of the amazing world we live in. It also reminds me that we are each just one tiny fragment of one larger than life puzzle.
