My Virtual Idol Concert Experience

Story By: Saul Garcia, Fashion Editor

I have been a fan of all sorts of virtual idols since 2020 when V-tubers (Virtual YouTubers) rose in popularity. They are like Hatsune Miku but are real people behind them.

There was a TikTok where a V-tube was using a Live 2d model at a convention singing. People thought that how they are done and people make lots of money just moving a photo around the screen. It was a free convection, but not all of them are like that.

In August 2024, I went to Hololive English’s 2nd concert, Breaking Dimensions, in New York at King’s Theater. Hololive is a Virtual Idol Agency who do annual performances in Japan and are YouTube streamer.

I have been a part of the Hololive community for around 4 years, and I finally got my hand on tickets to one of their concerts. I was so excited about it. I got to the venue an hour early so I didn’t have to wait and get stuck in the crowd.

A lot of people understood what I knew because I haven't met a lot of people who know what I’m talking about and I felt understood. But also being 16 years old meant I was one of the youngest people there. There are a lot of people who see the idols as a wife or like to make adult fan art of the members. I wasn’t into that and it made me very uncomfortable.

I don’t admit to liking V-tubers because I don’t want people to see me a different way thinking I like all these lewd things. I don’t; I was there to watch the people who inspire me and who have helped me grow as a person. I see them as my Idols and someone I want to be one day.

I remember waiting for the concert to start looking at the big LED screen. I hear the safety info go off and then the Lights go out and on the stage Hololive English’s first generation comes out singing their original song, “Reunion.” I balled my eyes out seeing them on the stage. It was like they were there in person.

Watching them perform reminded me of how they have grown as Idols and how much I’ve grown. Seeing them in person meant the world to me. It was something on my bucket list that I proudly checked off.

The rest of the concert was amazing being able to see everyone perform and have fun makes me want to perform on stage like them. I thank Hololive for all of their work and having amazing talents and I know they will keep doing amazing things.
