The Future of BHS Women's Wrestling

Story By: Piper Simard, Staff Writer

When most people think of wrestling, the majority of them think of men's wrestling but women's wrestling is just as important. Women's wrestling is the fastest-growing high school sport in the country. It is especially growing here in Colorado. Since CHSAA has included a separate division for girls at the Colorado State Championships, girls have only had one division where male wrestling has 4 divisions 2a, 3a, 4a, and 5a.

Girls wrestling was never big enough to have multiple divisions but starting this year the high school wrestling season of 2024-2025 girls will now have two divisions 4a and 5a. This is huge for girls wrestling and so many people are more aware of how amazing this sport is.

Wrestling isn’t just a martial arts sport it is so much more than that. Wrestling requires a person to go beyond their limits and always strive to be better. It is a constant mental battle to keep up with but with the hard work comes so much strength. Learning to work through the challenges and obstacles that come with wrestling can help a person greatly in their everyday life.

BHS started its first girl's wrestling team in 2022, the group started off small but the next year the number of girls had almost doubled. The team continues to grow in the school as the season gets closer. I joined the team the first year in 2022 and have been on it ever since. Wrestling has given me an entirely new perspective of what it takes to achieve what you want. After just two years of having a girl's team, the team had their first state champion Matilda Hruby (‘27), and state placer Isabella Smouse(‘25).

The future is bright for the BHS girl's wrestling team and the names are becoming well-known. As the 2024-2025 season starts to approach both girls and boys wrestlers are preparing to make a name for themselves as Brighton wrestlers.
