The Importance of Character in Buildings

Story By: Aubrey Shortridge, Staff Writer

As society gets older, so do the buildings that surround it. Yet, with societal aging comes new ideas and new standards. However, with these new upcomings surrounding technology and knowledge, the past becomes erased and replaced with what's new. In some instances, this is a good idea. It's important that society has better ways of heating and cooling homes as well as easier access to water and electricity. Yet, it can be observed that with the new buildings that are constructed every day, the personality they have becomes less and less so and the artistic value behind them is gone.

The importance of character in a society is huge because it is heavily influenced on the designs and architecture of what's been built. In the older times of life, back even before the Victorian ages, many buildings were designed to show a culture. These buildings told a story and informed many of the life some may live. Take St George's Chapel: due to the design of this chapel, it immediately gives off regality and shows that among other churches, it clearly meant business in King George's time.

Unfortunately, it has been noticed that in many countries, specifically America, architecture has become bland and lifeless. The homes that people live in no longer show the so-called character that societies claim to have. The fault?: Modernization and education of today. When one is asked to think of the future, many interpret the architecture to be simple and every building to hold very similar values. When the same person thinks of the past, they think of intricacy and even more so, art. The blame suddenly reveals itself to sit on the shoulders of education, and its refusal to teach more than modernization in today's art.

Through research and subjection it can be inferred that over time society begins to lose the character buildings used to hold as people begin to reach for the future and education begins to idolize stem over art.
