Why do words have meaning?

Story By: Adriana Quintana, Staff Writer

Words can have a variety of meanings because they can carry emotional, cultural, and social connections beyond what the literal word is. These connection canevoke strong feelings, as well as memories, and reactions in people. For example, certain words may be associated with historical events, social movements,or personal experiences, which can give them a powerful impact when used communicating with others.

But why?

Words have meaning because they are symbols that humans have agreed upon to represent objects, feelings, actions and ideas. This shared understanding allows us to communicate effectively what our words truly mean. One example of a word with charged meaning is “freedom.” Although its a basic word and you've probably already heard of it referring to the state being free, it carries significant emotional and cultural weight between the word and the charged meaning of it. For many people, “freedom” is associated with historical struggles for independence, civil rights movements, and personal liberation, making it a powerful and strong term. A other word is associated with the anticipation of good things to come, which naturally brings a sense of optimism and encouragement reacting a positive charged meaning.

As humans we tend to incorporate the wrong idea in what people say to others such being we should make a habit in more positive words into daily communication can be a great way to enhance interactions with words in a positive way to create a more uplifting environment. A few ways to do so compliment others with the use of positive words such as to appreciate admire and respect just by acknowledging the other persons efforts and qualities. A second way to do so is by expressing gratitude by always making sure to say thank you and to express why you feel that way by using grateful thankful and blessed can make a very big difference. A third way to do so is to encourage and support others by using words like “You got this” or  “you can achieve” supporting other people can really uplift their own lives just by a simple gesture. Last but not least being reducing the negative charged words, such as cussing and swearing negative words onto others. Our world shouldn't depend on negative words that truly can effect someone's life. Think before you speak.
